As this story continues to develop, we’ll add additional updates. Stay tuned as the U.S. TikTok ban drama unfolds.

September 24th, 2025

The TikTok ban saga just dropped a new twist. After months of political ping-pong, the U.S. and China have struck a deal that gives TikTok a new future in the states. That future looks like a U.S. only version of the app that uses a copy of the TikTok algorithm.

The plan is for U.S. based businesses Oracle, Silver Lake, and Andreessen Horowitz to take the reins of the new app, while ByteDance gets to keep a 20% bite of the action.

For brands and influencers this seems like a sigh of relief and a green light to keep building an audience on the platform. But don’t get too comfy with the way things are now. New ownership usually means new rules, so the content game may change fast. Stay nimble, bold, and keep your strategy scroll-stopping.

Announced earlier today, the president has signed another extension, delaying a TikTok ban in the US. This time around though, the extension will be 90 days instead of the 75 days he granted previously.

This is the third time that the law has been delayed by the current administration. The US press secretary is quoted as saying “President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure.”

At this point, most TikTok users are back to their regularly scheduled programs. Some users think the threat of the TikTok ban is passed, however this is still a developing situation. For businesses who use the platform to advertise and engage with their audience, keeping up to date and having a back-up plan are still cruicial.

We are, yet again, less than a week away from a TikTok ban deadline. In April of this year, the president pushed the deadline to June 19th for TikTok’s owners to sell off their US business. The hope was that this extension would give interested parties time to negotiate with ByteDance and China.

Unfortunately, because the United States and China have been at odds over tariffs lately, there’s a chance that the president will allow the app to go down again. On the other hand, he recently said that he’s open to extending the deadline.

Even though there are several companies and investors looking to make a deal with ByteDance, the Chinese company has not shown any interest in selling. If that’s the case, do you think that President Trump will allow the Chinese-owned company to continue operating in the United States? Or do you think it’s more likely that he’ll uphold the law passed by President Biden and ban TikTok nationwide? Drop your guess in the comments below!

April 5th has come and gone, but the TikTok ban has yet to take hold in the United States. So, what happened? Last week, the White House seemed confident that there would be a deal in the works by now. While their train isn’t completely de-railed it has hit a rather large roadblock.

New tarifs were put into place last week and China got hit hard. They topped the list, with a sweeping 54% tariff on all goods sold to the US. According to Donald Trump, the TikTok negotiations were nearly done until the tariff was announced.

There are reports that ByteDance sent an email to the White House stating the Chinese government would not approve a deal until tariffs are negotiated. In recent interviews the president has floated the idea of lowering the tariff to persuade China into a deal. However, the Chinese government has made no public statement indicating they’ve changed their minds.

For now, we’re all still watching and waiting.

The TikTok ban is set to go into effect in three short days! Anybody else feeling an odd sense of de ja vu? President Trump’s executive order that gave ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) an extension of their original deadline, is set to expire on April 5th.

Recently the president stated that he’s confident “a form of a deal” will be reached by April 5th. Immediately after that, he said that even if a deal isn’t agreed upon by that time, he has the right to extend his executive order allowing TikTok to continue doing business in the United States.

Something else that business owners need to understand is that the government of China has restricted ByteDance from selling the companies algorithm. Trump’s response to this? He’s floating the idea of reducing the tariffs he’s imposed on China in order to get the deal done.

With just days left, it doesn’t appear to us that a clear resolution is in sight just yet. We’ll keep you posted on what comes next.

Happy Valentine’s Day, TikTok lovers! Everybody who still has TikTok downloaded on their phones received a message today. The TikTok app is available again in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

iPhone TikTok Notification

Hopefully, you didn’t waste a ton of money last month on a used phone with the TikTok app. So, here’s the deal: TikTok is fully back…for now. Thanks to a promise from Attorney General Pam Bondi that the government will not prosecute Apple or Google for supporting the app.

That said, mark your calendars for April 5th, because that’s the new deadline for ByteDance to figure it out. At this stage, it’s all about business negotiations, and we’re just here for the ride.

How has your business been dealing with the TikTok ban drama? Are you still focusing on TikTok content or have you pivoted to other platforms?

And we’re back! Are you dizzy yet? TikTok has brought everything back to full operation in the United States. According to their statement, the app is back “…as a result of President Trump’s efforts.”

Welcome back message on the TikTok app

Trump posted on IG that he’s working towards a resolution to keep TikTok in business in the U.S. For now, he is promising that U.S. businesses who helps TikTok stay in operation before his announcement will be safe from liability.

What are your thoughts on this entire ordeal? Was President Biden’s initial ban based on merit? Is president-elect Trump’s response what you expected?

Jan 19th 11:30am pst

Wait, hold up! A few hours after the TikTok ban took effect, it looks like they’re taking steps to reverse it. We’ve just noticed a new message on our account.

Statement from TikTok about restoring service.

Will the app be back to normal operation by the end of the day? Or will this continue to drag out even longer? For creators and business owners in the U.S. relying on TikTok’s audience and tools, this is a real nail-biter.

Update: Jan 19th, 2025 6:00am pst

T-Day is here. Today, the U.S. TikTok ban officially went into effect. If you live in the U.S. and try to open the app you will be met with a message explaining the app will no longer work in the U.S. So, now what?

TikTok Ban Message on the app.

Did you make sure to back up every piece of content that you had on the platform? Did you follow every creator that you work with on other platforms? You definitely made sure to tell your followers how to find you on other sites, right? If not, you’re probably wondering if your content is gone forever.

Sadly, this might mean you’ll never see your TikTok content again. But, then again, maybe you will. Either way, we see this as a lesson. Start the habit of backing up your content on every platform. Ultimately, we have very little control over somebody else’s app.

TikTok may be baned now, but the message they’ve put out there is that they’ll be back. The company seems confident that when Trump takes office he will reverse the ban. Only time will tell. For now, it seems like the content is still there, but inaccessible for any updates or downloads through the account.

Update: Dec 30th, 2024

We all saw it happen. On April 24th 2024, President Biden signed a bill into law that gave the owners of TikTok an ultimatum. Either sell off your American interests by January 19th, 2025, or a U.S. TikTok Ban will go into effect. Obviously there’s been tons of back and speculation surrounding the TikTok ban and whether or not the law will go into effect. But, if your small business doesn’t have a TikTok exit strategy, you’re putting yourself at risk.

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance is appealing the law with the Federal Appeals Court right now. The court’s decision is expected by Dec 6th, and if they uphold the law, ByteDance will probably take it to a higher court, but their appeal clock is running out fast.

As for rumors about the possibility of a last minute sale of TikTok to an American company, ByteDance says that’s not really possible. Yes, this subject has been in the media for over 2 years. It’s been a real “Will they? Won’t they?” drama series. But, with this deadline looming, M30 is helping our clients get prepared with an exit strategy.

Don’t be the person who loses all of their hard work to a government ban. Take these steps to protect your business and keep your audience if/when the TikTok ban hits.

Sign saying Have an exit strategy

Planning For A TikTok Ban

If you believe their CEO’s statement, TikTok has no plans to exit the US market. Then again, if we believed what every CEO said, we’d all be in a world of hurt. Better to be prepared than making a mad dash at the last minute. Pull out your brand’s marketing strategy and get ready to re-work your digital marketing plan.

TikTok Ban Exit Strategy Step 1: Secure Your Audience

man researching target audience info.

To put together your plan for leaving TikTok, you need to zero in on who you’ve been talking to on the platform. If you run ads, use the ads manager dashboard to view demographics about who engages with your brand. Even if you’ve never paid for exposure on the platform, they’re nice enough to give you valuable insights (if you have a business profile). Export the data that TikTok provides and drill down into it to find out exactly who your audience is. From there, you’ll need to research what other platforms your audience is using.

You’ve been working hard for a long time to gain as large a following as you can. The point here is to find out where else they hang out. That way, when the TikTok ban comes down, you don’t lose them like you lost your bestie who changed schools in the middle of 4th grade.

TikTok Ban Exit Strategy Step 2: Learn The New Platforms

Social media info stacked on a computer

Not every platform is the same. Once you find your audience, you’ll need to figure out what type of content is getting their attention on that platform. For example, let’s say you run a bridal business and your target audience is female-identifying people between 20 and 40 years old getting married for the first time. You might want to move over to Insta.

Find out if those women are using the app to look at pics or watch videos for bridal inspo. What days of the week are they using it? Do they click on ads more often during a certain time of day? What keywords are popping up in their feeds? Answering these questions will help guide your marketing strategy and save you money.

TikTok Ban Exit Strategy Step 3: Have A Back-Up

Man backing up his content before the TikTok Ban as part of his exit strategy.

Store your content with a cloud service, a hard-drive, anywhere that’s secure and accessible outside of TikTok. Go through your posts with a fine-tooth comb and put everything in a portfolio for future use. Just because one platform goes away doesn’t mean you’ll never be able to use that content again.

Once you have all of your videos safely locked away, consider taking screenshots of customer comments. Or downloading content from influencers and partners that have featured your business on their pages. This piece of your TikTok Exit Strategy is super important. If you don’t grab things now, nobody really knows what will happen with them once the ban goes into effect.

TikTok Ban Exit Strategy Step 4: Cash In Now

Woman celebrating finishing her TikTok exit strategy

At this very moment, TikTok is in the news more than ever before. If you have an engaged audience there, cash in NOW. Use the platform to migrate your followers to your other social media accounts. Hype your brand up and make as many connections as you can while the tool is still available.

Will it eventually go away? Yeah, it probably will. That doesn’t mean you should ghost the people who have supported your brand there.

Just Another Bump In The Road

One of the hallmarks of success is the ability to pivot when things change. This whole TikTok ban debacle is just that. Another change, another pivot. For a small business, navigating the nuances of digital marketing can be challenging, but that’s what we’re here for! With tools like our Digital Marketing Checklist and How-To Guides, M30 is helping small businesses succeed online.
